Cookie law

Cookies (literally “little cookies”) are small text files that store different types of information about the user who is visiting a website, such as his or her location, the device he or she is connecting from (pc, smartphone, tablet..), the browser he or she is using, his or her authentication data, browsing preferences, etc… but they can also store data about his or her personal habits and choices: information the latter of which can be used retrospectively to profile the individual consumer. More specifically, two macrocategories of cookies are distinguished:

“Technical” cookies

Strictly necessary for the operation and enjoyment of the web service, they are used to collect information in aggregate form about visits to the site.
Among these we have:

  • Authentication cookies (for example, user input and password)
  • Personalization cookies (e.g., related to preference-saving activities)
  • Functionality cookies (e.g., saving shopping cart or language/currency preferences)
  • analytics cookies (i.e., statistical, considered technical if used by the operator to collect data in aggregate form (= without collecting IP addresses), about the number of users and how they visit the site)
  • flash player cookies (if they do not exceed the duration of the session)
“Profiling” cookies

serve to profile the user and send him targeted advertising, such as:

  • First- or third-party advertising profiling cookies;
  • retargeting cookies;
  • social network cookies;
  • Statistical cookies managed completely by the third party (except: analytics cookies installed directly on the server of the first party or its own server farm without third-party interaction, such as Piwik; cookies managed by the third party, but anonymized, i.e., in relation to which the third party cannot access disaggregated analytics data at the IP level).
