Work safety: protecting lone workers in the food industry

In large production facilities, ensuring the safety of people working alone is a real and concrete challenge.

This was the case at the Genoa plant of a major brand in the food industry, where cold rooms, warehouses and processing departments cover extensive areas, creating situations in which an operator may find themselves in difficulty without anyone becoming aware of it in time.

Managing safety across a site of this size requires constant visibility and immediate response capabilities. This awareness led to the decision to equip the facility with a system capable of automatically detecting emergency situations and monitoring technological and temperature alarms, with all events converging into a single centralised management platform.

The Solution

To meet these needs, TECNEL designed a system based on INFORMO IP 3.0, capable of managing the Man-Down features of the Spectralink 8441 Wi-Fi phones provided to staff.

These devices go far beyond simple voice communication: worn during the work shift, they can automatically detect alert signals — such as a fall, an emergency call, or loss of network coverage — and instantly transmit them to the central platform.

When a critical event occurs, INFORMO IP 3.0 does not waste a second:

  • It identifies the worker in difficulty
  • It locates their position
  • It simultaneously alerts the programmed recipients

The alert is delivered via text-to-speech phone call, SMS over the GSM network, and a summary panel displayed at the control station.

In addition to Man-Down management, INFORMO IP 3.0 receives the technological and temperature alarms present within the plant through on/off contacts, centralising all the facility’s safety monitoring systems into a single platform.

All of this is calibrated according to shifts, groups and schedules, ensuring that each notification always reaches the right people at the right time.

Today, the facility can rely on a safety system that works silently, but never stops.

It reduces response times, simplifies procedures, and gives management a clear, continuous view of everything happening across the site.

A real and tangible step forward — not only from a technological point of view, but also in the way safety is managed every day.
